Public invited to visit Orchid Show at Hong Kong Park (with photos)
*******************************************************************
Plum blossoms, orchids, chrysanthemums and bamboo are traditionally known as "The Four Gentlemen" among plants in Chinese culture. Orchids, which symbolise an elegant character, have the largest number of species in the plant kingdom. Some 120 species of native orchids have been found in Hong Kong. Members of the public now have a chance to take a close look at various orchids in the upcoming thematic exhibition at Hong Kong Park managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).

About 250 orchids with a rich variety of over 30 species will be displayed at the thematic exhibition to be held at the Display Plant House of the Forsgate Conservatory in Hong Kong Park starting from this Friday (October 28). Common species from genera including Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, Oncidium and Vanda will be featured in the exhibition.

Phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as moth orchids, have won the hearts of flower lovers in recent years as their flowers resemble moths in flight. Native to the tropics of Asia, Phalaenopsis orchids directly absorb moisture and nutrients from the humid air through their large and thick fleshy leaves. Thus, they need appropriate protection from direct sunlight as well as warmth and high humidity for cultivation.

Paphiopedilum orchids originate in the forests of tropical Asia. Their thick and glossy petals give rise to the name of lady's slipper orchid. Oncidium orchids, found throughout tropical America and unique in form, are commonly called the dancing lady in the light of their slender stem, gently drooping flower stalk and well-developed lip.

Featuring disc-like flowers, Vanda orchids are found in bright colours such as blue, violet and orange that are seldom seen in other orchids. They have good tolerance to drought and can flower two to three times a year with abundant sunlight.

In addition to the display of the beauty of orchids, the characteristics as well as details of some common species of the orchids will also be showcased by means of display boards to provide comprehensive information for visitors. To further enhance public understanding, guided tours will be held between 1pm and 4pm hourly on November 6, December 25 to 27 and January 1. Each tour will last for half an hour.

Park-goers are welcome to visit the exhibition, which will be open to the public free of charge from 9am to 5pm daily from October 28 to January 15 next year at the Display Plant House of the Forsgate Conservatory of Hong Kong Park, 19 Cotton Tree Drive, Central.
