Cluster of Multi-Drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital made the following announcement today (October 3):

     Seven patients (aged 18 to 92) in a female orthopaedics ward had been confirmed to have Multi-Drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) since September 14. Three of them have already been discharged. The remaining four are still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation with stable conditions.

     The following enhanced infection and cleansing measures have already been adopted:
  1. Cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned;
  2. Stringent contact precautions, including dedicated use of clinical equipment for all patients in the ward concerned and enhance hand hygiene;
  3. Environmental samples for monitoring; and
  4. Attention to contamination-prone procedures.
 
     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation on the ward.
