Research Grants Council to present public lecture on life quality of elders on September 25

The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present its third public lecture this year under the theme “Life Quality of Elders” on September 25 (Sunday) at Hong Kong Central Library.
The RGC has invited Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Social Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong, Dr Esther Chow, and Professor Li Min of the School of Chinese Medicine at the Hong Kong Baptist University, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. In connection with the lifespan perspective, individuals create unique life stories capturing their authentic identity. People continue to tell and revise their remembered past as they age. Dr Chow will give a lecture entitled "Life Stories of Wise Elders: Lived Elderly Wisdom in the Hong Kong Chinese Context" to demonstrate how to understand one's trajectory of psychological well-being in the life context.
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease of the elderly with the mean onset age between 60 to 70. The prevalence of PD among Chinese is the highest in the world, and it is estimated that more than 6.5 million people will suffer from PD in 2030. Professor Li will deliver a talk entitled "Neuroprotective Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Relieve the Progression of Parkinson's disease" to introduce her team’s latest research findings on the clinical experience of Chinese medicine practitioners and the neuroprotection of TCM for treating PD.
Since 2009, leading scholars in their respective fields have been invited by the RGC to deliver public lectures. These lectures aim to arouse public interest in local research developments.
