The 26th Chinese Poetry Writing Competition prize presentation ceremony was held today (September 22) at the Hong Kong Central Library. Organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the competition aimed to promote proficiency in Chinese language and the appreciation of Chinese literature with rhymes.

The First Prizes in the open category and the student category went to Miss Li Lai-to and Chinese University of Hong Kong student Miss Leung Tsoi-hang respectively.

The two First Prize-winning works feature unique themes. The former describes the functions of a dehumidifier in fine writing, and the choice of depicting the modern electrical appliance is innovative. The latter portrays a poet's expressive lament over the changes of a small town. Other winning works feature a wide variety of topics, including allegories on technologies, nostalgia, personal feelings and nature.

Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, the Acting Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, said that for the sake of passing down the heritage of the long-standing and extensive Chinese literature, the HKPL will continue to enrich its literature collection and regularly organise a wide range of activities to cultivate the public's interest in the appreciation of Chinese literature with rhymes and thereby promote poetry writing.

Other guests at the ceremony included the Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Libraries and Development), Miss Rochelle Lau, and adjudicators Professor Ho Man-wui, Professor Nicholas Louis Chan, Professor Wong Kuan-io and Professor Lau Wai-lam. Also adjudicating for this year's competition were Professor Chan Chi-ching and Professor Tang Pui-ling.

The HKPL has been organising the Chinese Poetry Writing Competition annually since 1991. This is the 13th time that participants have taken the opportunity to showcase their literary talent in writing Chinese ci poetry.

With almost 700 entries, the competition received an enthusiastic response this year. Participants of the student category were mainly high school and college students, while those of the open category came from different walks of life.

The competition consisted of a student category and an open category, each with a First Prize, a Second Prize, a Third Prize, five Merit Prizes and two Special Prizes. The winners' list is as follows:
