Cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) made the following announcement today (September 13):
 
     Two male patients (aged 61 and 73) in the Renal Unit of PYNEH were confirmed as having Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) on September 9. In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened patients who had contact with the index patients. Four more patients (three male and one female, aged 54 to 72) have been confirmed as having VRE without clinical symptoms. Three of the patients are hospitalised under isolation with stable condition, and the other three have been discharged.
 
     The Renal Unit concerned has adopted the following enhanced infection control measures:
 
  1. Enhanced hand hygiene and stringent contact precautions have been applied;
  2. Enhanced attention to contamination-prone procedures; and
  3. Enhanced disinfection and cleaning of the ward concerned.
 
     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
