Contractors fined for violation of safety legislation

China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited and Hitachi Elevator Engineering Company (Hong Kong) Limited were each fined $180,000 at Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (September 12) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations and the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Safety Management) Regulation. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on October 30, 2014, on a construction site in Causeway Bay. A worker while carrying out testing of lift emergency stop switches inside a lift shaft at G/F, was struck to death by a descending lift car.
