**********************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Over 100 Hospice Services Ambassadors were recognised and commended by the Hospital Authority (HA) today (September 10) for their dedicated services and support to enhance the quality of life for the terminal cancer patients in public hospitals.

To provide quality hospice care for terminal cancer patients, the HA and the Li Ka Shing Foundation have launched the “Heart of Gold” Hong Kong Hospice Services Programme since 2007.  Up till today, about 800 volunteers have attended the training programme to become the Hospice Services Ambassadors.  The training programme provides the basic knowledge and skills of hospice care to the volunteers.  Upon completion of the training, the volunteers will cooperate with the healthcare professionals to serve the terminal cancer patients, mainly to enhance their psychological and social support such as sharing care, paying ward or home visits.

The Recognition Ceremony today for the Hospice Services Ambassadors was officiated by the HA Director (Cluster Services), Dr Cheung Wai-lun, and the representative of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, Ms Chan Wai-lan.  In the Ceremony, the officiating guests added “Love”, “Patience”, “Concentricity”, “Concern” and “Care” to the “Giving Tree” to convey that hospice care has adopted a multi-disciplinary approach in taking care of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the terminal cancer patients so to enhance their quality of life.

Over 130 Hospice Services Ambassadors and guests attended the Ceremony today. Three of the Ambassadors shared with the guests their skills and experience in the training programme as well as working in the hospice centres.
