The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, met the visiting Prime Minister of Canada, Mr Justin Trudeau, at Government House this afternoon (September 6) to exchange views on issues of mutual concern.

Mr Leung noted that Hong Kong is home to the largest Canadian community in Asia and there is also a substantial population of Hong Kong immigrants in Canada. He added that the two places have a long history of friendship and have been enjoying close economic, trade, social and cultural ties.

Mr Leung said that during his visit to Canada in June last year, he introduced Hong Kong's “super-connector” role between the Mainland of China and the world. He said he hoped that more Canadian enterprises would establish a presence in Hong Kong and unlock more business opportunities by leveraging the city's huge development potential in the country's Belt and Road Initiative.

He was also delighted to learn that the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) between Hong Kong and Canada had entered into force today. He hoped that the IPPA could boost investors' confidence, further enhance investment flows and promote economic and trade relations between Hong Kong and Canada.
