Government reserves right to take actions against LegCo election candidates who advocated or promoted "independence of the HKSAR"

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government today (August 30) expressed concerns about individual candidates in the Legislative Council (LegCo) election advocating or promoting the "independence of the Hong Kong SAR" during the election period. The HKSAR Government reserves the right to take follow-up actions in accordance with the law.

"The HKSAR Government has always been striving to ensure that public elections in Hong Kong are held in strict accordance with the law, openly, honestly and fairly, in line with the expectations of the community at large," the spokesman said.

"The Government is concerned that, among all the LegCo election candidates, individual candidates have during the election period advocated or promoted the 'independence of the Hong Kong SAR', since such behaviour goes against the statutory declaration that they will uphold the Basic Law and pledge allegiance to the HKSAR which they signed before their nomination was validated. The HKSAR Government reserves the right to take follow-up actions in accordance with the law," the spokesman added.
