Police conducted a territory-wide operation between August 10 and August 16 to raise public awareness of safe cycling through stringent enforcement action.

During the operation period, the Police used enforcement action to target cycling offences such as failing to comply with traffic signs or signals, cycling on pavement and walking on cycle tracks. Enforcement action resulted in the issue of 21 verbal warnings and 1,006 summonses to those who committed offences.

A Police spokesman said that between January and June 2016, there were 983 traffic accidents involving bicycles, resulting in 1,012 casualties, with six fatalities included. A total of 429 cases occurred on cycle tracks, which is more than 374 cases that occurred on roads, resulting in 444 and 386 casualties respectively.

The Police reminded members of the public that traffic accidents can be fatal. Cyclists are reminded to comply with Road Traffic Ordinance. Offenders committing cycling offences will be prosecuted.
