August 2016 issue of Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (August 15) the August 2016 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains three feature articles entitled "Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Transportation, Storage and Courier Services Sector, 2005 to 2014", "Results of the 2014/15 Household Expenditure Survey" and "Drug Abuse Situation in Hong Kong in 2015". Statistics presented in the "Drug Abuse Situation in Hong Kong in 2015" article are based on the data source from the Security Bureau, Government Secretariat.

"Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Transportation, Storage and Courier Services Sector, 2005 to 2014"

     The transportation, storage and courier services sector continues to play a significant role in our economy. In 2014, this sector accounted for 6.2% of the Gross Domestic Product at current basic prices. Amid the unstable external environment in 2014, the overall business performance of the transportation, storage and courier services sector continued to maintain a steady growth.

     This feature article presents statistics on the business performance and operating characteristics of the transportation, storage and courier services sector during the period 2005 to 2014, mainly based on the findings of the Annual Survey of Economic Activities. Reference is also made to relevant statistics from other sources for 2015.

"Results of the 2014/15 Household Expenditure Survey"

     This feature article gives a brief account of the methodology and major findings of the Household Expenditure Survey conducted from October 2014 to September 2015.

     The survey results showed that on average, a household spent $27,627 per month on food, consumer goods and services in 2014/15. Analyses of household expenditure patterns by household characteristics such as household size, household composition and number of earners in the household are presented in this feature article.

"Drug Abuse Situation in Hong Kong in 2015"

     Through the concerted efforts of the government and the community, drug problem in Hong Kong has ameliorated in the past few years. However, hidden drug abuse is still a concern. This feature article gives an overview of the latest drug abuse situation and drug trends in Hong Kong by making reference to statistics derived from the Central Registry of Drug Abuse maintained by the Security Bureau, Government Secretariat. Moreover, statistics on drug use among students and law enforcement on drug offences are presented to supplement the analysis of the drug abuse situation, so as to give a wider perspective on the drug problem.

     Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables.
