Film Archive to hold free screenings on "War of National Resistance" (with photos)
**********************************************************************************
The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present a special series entitled "Cine Memories of the War of National Resistance" in early September to revisit stories and moments of the war of resistance against Japanese aggression. The following two selected features, both produced in 1938, will be shown free of charge:

"Eight Hundred Heroes" (1938)
 September 2 and 3 at 7.30pm

 "Incident in the Pacific" (1938)
September 3 at 2.30pm; and
September 4 at 7.30pm

Both films will be screened at the HKFA Cinema. Admission is free with tickets which will be distributed at the enquiry counter of the HKFA starting tomorrow (August 1) on Mondays and from Wednesdays to Sundays from 10am to 8pm. Each person can receive up to two tickets on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last.

"Eight Hundred Heroes" shows that, after the occupation of Shanghai by the Japanese army, 800 Nationalist soldiers protected the army's retreat and defended the Sihang Warehouse to the very end. Despite being produced as a silent film, its conscientious production made the feature a spectacular and realistic re-enactment of the epic battle. A live music accompaniment will be specially arranged during screening. Chinese and English subtitles are available.

"Incident in the Pacific" centres on two lovers in northeastern China defending their country fearlessly against the Japanese invasion, with Lo Ban-chiu fighting on the front line and Lee Yi-nin infiltrating deep into the enemy camp as a spy. Director Hou Yao began producing Cantonese-language sound films in Hong Kong in the 1930s. His national defence films were based on reality and incorporated elements of excitement and romance. The film is in Cantonese without subtitles.
