Young Cantonese opera talents to perform classics in September

     The Hong Kong Young Talent Cantonese Opera Troupe will perform three classics in September. The three programmes to be staged are "The Sounds of Battle", "Time to Go Home" and "The Battle of the Qiu River". The performances will start at 7.30pm. Details are as follows:

"The Sounds of Battle"
September 19 (Monday)
Auditorium, Ko Shan Theatre New Wing
Main cast: Lam Tin-yau, Cheng Nga-kei, Johnson Yuen, Kwok Kai-fai, Lam Tsz-ching and To Wing-sum
Tickets: $100, $140 and $180

     The State of Zhao seeks help from the State of Qin when the State of Qi invades its borders. At the time, Ma Xingtian, a senior official of Zhao, has a godson named Qingyun who was born to be ambitious. Princess Cuibi is very fond of Qingyun and appoints him as the General of the Agile Cavalry. After the Qi army retreats, King Zhuang of the superior State of Qin forces Cuibi to become his bride. Placing her country first, Cuibi pretends to agree to the proposal. The battle between Qin and Zhao starts. Qingyun eventually defeats the Qin army and unites with Cuibi to become a couple.

"Time to Go Home"
September 24 (Saturday)
Auditorium, Tai Po Civic Centre
Main cast: Lam Tin-yau, Cheng Nga-kei, Johnson Yuen, Kwok Kai-fai, Lam Tsz-ching and Lai Yiu-wei
Tickets: $100 and $160

     Pingsheng and Pinniang are a loving couple, but they are set up by Pingsheng's cousins, who claim that Pinniang is terminally ill. Pingsheng's mother, Lady Fang, puts Pinniang in a different house to recuperate and prohibits Pingsheng from visiting his wife. After Pingsheng leaves home for a military expedition, Lady Fang gives Pinniang some gold and a maid and coerces her to leave the family. When Pingsheng returns home after the battle, his mother tells him that Pinniang has already passed away. Pingsheng visits his wife's tomb and cries his heart out. His love moves Pinniang, who steps up to reunite with her husband.

"The Battle of the Qiu River"
September 27 (Tuesday)
Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall
Main cast: Lam Tin-yau, Cheng Nga-kei, Johnson Yuen, Kwok Kai-fai, Lam Tsz-ching and Lai Yiu-wei
Tickets: $100, $120, $140 and $160

     The towns of Fang and Yun are battling for control of the Qiu River. Yun Dahao demands that his son Hanzhang and his daughter Jinchang be the vanguard. Jinchang is captured heartlessly but Fang Ziyan, Hanzhang's lover, secretly helps Hanzhang sneak into the Fang army to save his sister. Hanzhang returns to his camp and is condemned by Dahao. Seeing that his lover is about to be executed, Ziyan tries to negotiate peace with a letter and begs Dahao to release his son. The two families eventually agree to retreat their armies and re-establish their amicable relationship.

     The performances by the Hong Kong Young Talent Cantonese Opera Troupe are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets are now available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk).      A talk (to be conducted in Cantonese) by Lam Tin-yau and Cheng Nga-kei will be held at 7.30pm on September 28 (Wednesday) at AC2, Level 4, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Admission is free. Limited seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
