******************************************************************************************
The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, and six university council chairmen today (July 21) attended the Guangdong/Hong Kong Universities High Level Meeting in Guangzhou to exchange views with education officials and leaders of higher education institutions of the province on the latest developments of post-secondary education and co-operation opportunities between the two places.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Ng pointed out that Hong Kong and Mainland higher education institutions have all along co-operated with and complemented each other in the areas of talent grooming and exchanges of teachers and students, and the relationship between Hong Kong and Guangdong is even closer due to geographical proximity.

"In the 2015/16 academic year, nearly 12 000 Mainland students are studying at University Grants Committee-funded institutions in Hong Kong. Of them, 1 600 are from Guangdong. Over the past three academic years, more than 3 000 Hong Kong students went to the Mainland each year to pursue undergraduate studies. Statistics in 2015 showed that over 15 500 Hong Kong students were studying at Mainland higher education institutions and graduate schools, representing an increase of nearly 40 per cent since 2011," he said.

"At the same time, researchers of Hong Kong and Mainland institutions have forged a close partnership, with the number of joint research projects rising from fewer than 900 in 2011 to 1 300 in late 2015. One-fifth of them involved institutions in Guangdong. In addition, so far six institutions from Hong Kong have established a research base or institute in Shenzhen."

Mr Ng expressed the hope that the meeting would promote high-level exchanges between institutions in Hong Kong and Guangdong. He said he believed that the establishment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Higher Education Institution Alliance later this year would further promote talent grooming and research collaboration, providing students of different disciplines with more opportunities for learning, internship and development.

Also discussed at the meeting was the Belt and Road Initiative and the development opportunities it holds for higher education institutions. Many institutions have engaged themselves in talent and academic exchanges and research collaboration with their counterparts in Belt and Road countries, and will enhance the effort for the sake of their long-term development as well as the needs of their students.

The delegation then visited Guangzhou Saliai Stem Cell Science and Technology Co Ltd and was given an update on the development of hi-tech industries in Guangzhou.

Today Mr Ng also met with leaders and officials of Guangdong Province, including the Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, Mr Hu Chunhua, and the Director-General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, Mr Luo Weiqi, to introduce the latest developments of education in Hong Kong.

The university council chairmen joining Mr Ng to visit Guangdong are Mr Herman Hu of the City University of Hong Kong, Mr Cheng Yan-kee of the Hong Kong Baptist University, Mr Rex Auyeung of Lingnan University, Dr Norman Leung of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Mr Ignatius Chan of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Mr Andrew Liao of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Other officials include the Under Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, and the Principal Assistant Secretary for Education (Higher Education), Ms Sharon Ko. They will return to Hong Kong tonight.
