Five secondary students representing Hong Kong at the 47th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Switzerland won a gold medal, three silver medals and a bronze medal. The Team will return to Hong Kong this evening (July 18).

The gold medallist was Secondary Five student Tai Wai-ting from Queen Elizabeth School, while the three silver medallists were Secondary Five student Lydia Mak from Good Hope School, Grade 11 student Frankie Lam from Diocesan Boys' School and Grade 11 student Jeff York Ye from GT (Ellen Yeung) College. The bronze medallist was Grade 11 student Brian Yang from Diocesan Boys' School.

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, congratulated the Hong Kong Team on its outstanding performance in the competition. He said, "The good results achieved by the students not only demonstrate their keen interest and ability in physics fully but also reflect the success of collaboration among the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Baptist University and the Education Bureau (EDB).

"All student contestants to the IPhO have been selected from the outstanding performers in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad. They have attended enhancement programmes in physics at universities, commissioned by the HKAGE, before attending the IPhO. Their participation in the competition has been fully funded by the EDB.

"The excellent performance of the Hong Kong Team has indicated that we have students possessing immense potential in science. The EDB will continue to enhance the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education with an aim to nurture more multiple talents in related fields of science and technology to strengthen Hong Kong's competitiveness globally," Mr Ng added.

This year's IPhO was held from July 10 to 17 in Zurich, Switzerland, with a total of 398 contestants from 87 countries/regions. The IPhO aims to promote education in physics, strengthen interaction and co-operation among experts in physics worldwide, and train and inspire teenagers who possess great potential in physics.
