Exhibition on major sports events launches Summer Reading Month 2016 (with photos)
**********************************************************************************
A thematic exhibition for children entitled "All About Sports Events" opened today (July 16) at the Exhibition Gallery of Hong Kong Central Library to launch Summer Reading Month 2016 – this year's edition of the annual event aimed at encouraging summer reading and related parent-child activities. Organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Summer Reading Month seeks to motivate children, through a variety of parent-child programmes, to make good use of library resources and foster a regular reading habit during the summer vacation.

The exhibition highlights eight international multi-sports events, including the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the World Games, the Asian Games and the Universiade, as well as their respective sports competitions. Visitors can also read selected books and electronic resources on the history of sports and inspirational stories about outstanding athletes, thus experiencing the joy of reading while also learning more about sports and sportsmanship. The exhibition runs until August 15. Visiting families are also invited to participate in the "Contests on Dramatisation - Enjoy Sport", in which they can use their own creative minds to complete a sports-related story with storytelling and dramatisation.

Summer Reading Month includes a wide range of cultural activities such as ocarina and a cappella music theatres, a puppet show, Western wind music and Chinese music mini-concerts, and a mime and a dance performance, offering great entertainment for families. Various public libraries will also hold activities including talks, book exhibitions and workshops (including storytelling by the elderly, language learning through storytelling, parent-child drawing and handicraft workshops) for families to enjoy a fruitful and fun summer vacation together.

The Reading Charter activity is also held during Summer Reading Month at all public libraries to promote reading through voluntary pledges. The Charter aims to encourage people to read more by achieving reading goals. Each participating reader will be presented with a souvenir.

The activities of Summer Reading Month are free of charge. Seat reservation or admission tickets are required for some of the programmes. Details can be found in the Summer Reading Month booklet available at all public libraries and www.hkpl.gov.hk/srm. For enquiries, please call 2921 2660.
