International Arts Carnival opens (with photos)

     The annual summer programme International Arts Carnival (IAC) opened tonight (July 8) with a multimedia musical theatre and puppet version of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" produced by Theater Hikosen from Japan. In the production, performers in colourful masks and dazzling costumes along with exciting staging and projection retell a classic adventure inspiring children to pursue their dreams.

     The performances will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre with Chinese and English surtitles.

     Among the other highlights of the IAC, the All-American Boys Chorus, with its angelic young voices, will entertain members of the public by performing all-time favourites at 7.30pm on July 23 at the Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium and at 3pm on July 24 at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall Auditorium.

     France's pioneering Blanca Li Dance Company will deliver a futuristic dance extravaganza in "ROBOT", featuring agile dancers on the stage with lovable NAO robots. It will be performed at 7.30pm on August 5 and 6, and at 3pm on August 7, at the Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium.

     Other performances in the festival line-up include puppetry, music, dance, interactive theatre for infants, clown theatre, music theatre and magic. Films from around the world will also be screened.

     The outreach touring programmes include puppetry in "Journey to the Colourful Bubbles" by Little Smudges Theatre, "Voices First" by Zense A Cappella, and the tap dance theatre show "Dr Happy to the Rescue" by R&T (Rhythm & Tempo). Workshops, cultural tours and exhibitions are also part of the extension activities.

     The IAC, organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is running until August 7 to feature a variety of events for family entertainment. Tickets are available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk). Telephone credit card bookings can be made on 2111 5999.
