New social welfare facilities proposed by non-governmental organisation
***********************************************************

In response to media enquiries, the Labour and Welfare Bureau today (July 5) confirmed that the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council (SKHWC) has indicated to the Social Welfare Department (SWD) its intention to submit an application for a grant from the Lotteries Fund for developing an integrated services building, which would include a residential care home for the elderly, a special child care centre and a youth hostel, on a site at Yuen Long, New Territories, to be donated to the SKHWC by Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited.

"The Government has been striving to increase the number of places of residential care homes for the elderly and special child care centres to cater for the community's demand for these services. Therefore, we welcome such a donation of land to enable a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to develop these much-needed welfare facilities," the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, said.

Mr Cheung said that the Government would assist NGOs to develop the land under their ownership, including land donated to them, for development of different welfare facilities that are in demand.

NGOs may apply for Lotteries Fund grants for implementing social welfare projects supported by the SWD. All applications for Lotteries Fund grants, including that from the SKHWC for the proposed facilities referred to above, will be processed in accordance with the applicable rules and procedures.
