     The Director of Fire Services, Mr Lai Man-hin, is deeply saddened by the death of Senior Station Officer Mr Thomas Cheung, who passed away in United Christian Hospital yesterday (June 21).

     Mr Thomas Cheung sustained serious injuries while attending a no. 4 alarm fire in an industrial centre at 7 Ngau Tau Kok Road in Ngau Chi Wan. He was sent to United Christian Hospital in a coma and passed away at 9.54pm yesterday.

     "I am profoundly grieved at the loss of this brave Senior Station Officer. All our colleagues are highly saddened by the loss of Mr Cheung. I have, on behalf of all our colleagues, offered the deepest condolences to Mr Cheung's family," Mr Lai said.

     Mr Cheung is survived by his wife and a son.

    "Our Welfare Officer is closely liaising with Mr Cheung's family and will render our utmost assistance to help them through this sad and difficult time. The Fire Services Department (FSD) will set up a funeral committee to make arrangements for Mr Cheung's funeral," Mr Lai said.

     Mr Thomas Cheung, aged 30, joined the FSD in October 2010 as a Station Officer and was promoted to Senior Station Officer in October 2015. He had served in various fire stations including Tai Po Fire Station, Aberdeen Fire Station and Chung Hom Kok Fire Station. His last posting was at the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy since April 2016.

     Among the other eight personnel who received treatment at the hospital, seven have been discharged while one is in stable condition and receiving medical treatment in the hospital. Mr Lai expressed sincere wishes for their speedy recovery.
