Buildings Department releases preliminary report on roof structure collapse at CityU sports hall
*********************************************************

The Buildings Department (BD) today (June 17) released the preliminary report on the collapse of the roof structure at the Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall of the Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre at the City University of Hong Kong, which occurred on May 20.

The preliminary report covers the BD's initial findings on the surrounding circumstances and identification of factors that possibly contributed to the collapse.

Since the collapse on May 20, the BD has carried out investigation into various aspects with a view to establishing what caused the collapse.

While a number of factors that possibly contributed to the collapse incident have been identified, further investigation including sample taking, laboratory testing of samples and materials, and detailed site verification have to be carried out. Detailed analysis will be conducted including computer modelling and calculations when the material testing results are available.

As the BD's investigation is still in progress, it is inappropriate for the department to comment on what caused the collapse, whether plan submission to the BD was required for carrying out the roof greening and the associated liability issues at this stage.

The preliminary report has been uploaded to the BD's website: www.bd.gov.hk.
