********************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, started her visit to New York on June 9 (New York time). It is the last stop in her visit to the US.

In the morning, Mrs Lam had a breakfast meeting with the Chinese Consul General in New York, Ms Zhang Qiyue, to express gratitude for the provision of consular assistance to Hong Kong people in need. She then visited the High Line, which is an innovative project that showcases the joint efforts of both the public and private sectors in preserving and re-using public open space. The project has successfully transformed an obsolete railway into an urban park and spurred new development in the neighbourhoods along the line. Mrs Lam was briefed by the Principal of James Corner Field Operations, Mr Keith O'Connor, and the Chief Operating Officer of Friends of the High Line, Ms Julie Twitmyer, on the successful experience of the High Line in delivering urban revitalisation and city greening.

Mrs Lam then called on the Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr Liu Jieyi, to thank him for supporting Hong Kong in United Nations matters, such as making regular reports to the United Nations on the implementation of international covenants and conventions that are extended to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

At noon, Mrs Lam delivered a speech at a luncheon speaking event hosted by the Asia Society, which is dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships among peoples, leaders and institutions of Asia and the US. In addition to having its headquarters in New York, the Asia Society has established centres in Hong Kong and Houston. Mrs Lam spoke on the latest developments in the cultural scene in Hong Kong, in particular the West Kowloon Cultural District project, as well as the importance and benefits of promoting the development of culture and creative industries in Hong Kong.

After lunch, Mrs Lam visited the Manhattan School of Music and met with its President, Mr James Gandre, and Provost and Senior Vice President, Ms Marjorie Merryman, to explore potential collaborative opportunities to foster more exchanges and communications between the musicians and artists of Hong Kong and New York. She then visited the Lincoln Center and met with the Executive Vice Presidents, Mr Russell Granet and Ms Lesley Friedman Rosenthal, as well as the Senior Director of Lincoln Center International, Mr Keith Lieberthal, to learn about the experience of operation and administration of a cluster of dedicated performance venues as well as the education and outreach efforts of the Center, and to explore opportunities for collaboration. Mrs Lam was then given a tour of the facilities of the Center by Mr Lieberthal.

In the evening, Mrs Lam attended the Hong Kong Association of New York Gala Dinner, where she spoke on the competitiveness of Hong Kong and the roles that Hong Kong can play under China's Belt and Road Initiative.

On June 10 (New York time), Mrs Lam will speak at the breakfast meeting hosted by the National Committee on US-China Relations, which is an influential bipartisan think tank that closely follows the developments in Hong Kong, to provide an update on the latest political and economic landscape in Hong Kong, before returning to Hong Kong in the afternoon. Mrs Lam will arrive in Hong Kong in the evening on June 11.
