The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
The spokesperson of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) made the following announcement today (June 4) on a tuberculosis patient case:
A 84-year-old male patient of a hematology ward of PMH was confirmed positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis on May 28. The patient was immediately transferred to the isolation ward at the Infectious Disease Centre for treatment. According to the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital immediately traced the patients who stayed in the same cubicles and discovered four more close contacts of the patient. Twenty eight staff were casual contacts of the patients and they did not perform any high risk procedure to the patient. The hospital immediately reported the case to the Department of Health and carried out contact tracing work.
The hospital has located three close contacts of the patient and has arranged follow-up investigation for them. The hospital has explained the case to staff concerned, and will continue to locate the other close contact. No concerned patient and staff members have been reported of any symptom of tuberculosis so far. The hospital will continue monitoring the health condition of concerned patients and staff.
