Fraudulent phone calls purporting to be made by HAD
***************************************************

The Home Affairs Department (HAD) has recently received public enquiries about suspicious phone calls purporting to be made by HAD's enquiry hotline (2835 2500). The caller claimed to be a member of HAD staff and asked the called party for personal information and to pay immediately for services to rectify their immigration record.

A spokesman for the HAD said, "We have not made the calls in question. We will neither make calls to members of the public through the hotline nor request the public to pay or provide sensitive personal information. We have already referred the cases to the Police for follow-up investigation.

"We would like to remind members of the public to stay alert, and they should not follow the caller's instructions if they receive suspected fraudulent calls. If they have any doubts they should report the matter to the Police."
