Territory-wide operation to promote pedestrian safety

     Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety operation yesterday (May 26). Through stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the senior citizens, were reminded of the importance of road safety.
 
     A total of 15 verbal warnings and 1 741 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road traffic regulations during the operation conducted from May 20 to May 26.
 
     During the period, Police issued 1 360 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 166 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, and 104 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than by means of the light signal crossing.
 
     "Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
