Transcript of remarks by SLW on stepped up monitoring of elderly homes
*********************************************************

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, on strengthening inspection and monitoring of residential care homes for the elderly after attending the Hong Kong Annual Conference 2016 organised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors today (May 20):

Reporter: Regarding the establishment of a website to upload the names of private homes and the number of warnings they have, when will this website be available and will it include all private homes? Can you give us more details?

Secretary for Labour and Welfare: The Social Welfare Department is moving ahead with determination on all fronts to step up surveillance, inspection and monitoring of all private elderly homes. At the same time, we'll do what we can to help them, for example, in terms of the training of staff, in terms of their management skills, their governance and so on. So it is not just a question of inspection. Of course we will step up inspection, we will be enhancing the staffing and also the monitoring system as well. Transparency and accountability will certainly be up on our agenda. It will take a bit of time but the department has got long-term, medium-term and short-term plans to achieve its major strategy of lifting the whole standard of elderly homes and also to instil confidence in the minds of users in Hong Kong.
