The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The President of the Legislative Council (LegCo), Mr Jasper Tsang, is visiting Budapest in Hungary upon the invitation of the Hungarian National Assembly.

Mr Tsang began the visit on Monday (April 4) by paying a courtesy call on and attending a dinner hosted by the Chinese Ambassador to Hungary, Mr Duan Jielong.

On his second day (April 5) in Budapest, Mr Tsang first met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Mr Péter Szijártó, in the morning. In tandem with Hungary's expanding economic and commercial relations with countries in the Asian region and with China in particular, they both shared the view that Hong Kong and Hungary should deepen their trade, commercial and social ties.

Mr Tsang then attended a working lunch hosted by the Deputy of the Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly and President of the Hungarian-Chinese Friendship Group, Dr Márta Mátrai. Joined by other members of the Hungarian National Assembly, they exchanged views on issues of mutual interest, and in particular the practices of the two legislatures.

A meeting with the Minister for National Economy of Hungary; Mr Mihály Varga, was held in the afternoon. Mr Varga gave Mr Tsang an introduction of the latest economic development in Hungary.  They discussed the potential opportunities for Hong Kong and Hungary to benefit from Mainland's Belt and Road Initiative.

After the meeting, Mr Tsang was interviewed by Hír TV, a Hungarian television news channel, on Hong Kong's socio-political development.
After a meeting with the Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Dr Csaba József Szilágyi, Mr Tsang delivered a lecture at the university in the evening. The lecture, titled "Implementation of 'one country, two systems' in Hong Kong", was well received by an audience of over 50 students and faculty.  Mr Tsang talked about the evolving relationship between Hong Kong and the Central Government, and shared his insights on key political events that happened in Hong Kong since 1997.
Mr Tsang will continue his visit in Hungary today (April 6) to meet with the Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly and the Governor of the Hungarian National Bank.
