Hong Kong composers to share experiences of musical creativity

     A series of talks entitled "Sharing Lectures by Hong Kong Composers 2016" will be held by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in May and June.

     The Hong Kong Composers' Guild has invited six acclaimed local composers to share their experiences and views of music composition. Live music demonstrations will also be arranged to enhance the audience's knowledge of the composers.

     Details of the lectures are as follows:

May 4 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Our Community as a Source of Inspiration for Music Compositions" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker: Dr Ada Lai
Moderator: Viola Yuen
Demonstrators: Terry Chan (violin) and Cheung King-lun (bassoon)

     Ada Lai received her bachelor of arts and master's degrees in music and philosophy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She later completed her doctorate of philosophy in composition at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Lai was on the organising committee of ISCM World Music Days 2002 and co-ordinated the SOUND-IMAGination concert series. She has also taken part in various exhibitions and seminars in music composition and creative music education.

May 11 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Bewilderment" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker: Dr Raymond Mok
Moderator: Dr Tang Lok-yin
Demonstrator: Chan Chi-yuk (dizi)

     Raymond Mok holds a master of philosophy degree in composition from the University of Hong Kong and a doctorate of philosophy in composition from the University of Adelaide, Australia. In 2013 and 2014 respectively he was awarded Second Prize (Chamber Work for Chinese Instruments Solo/Composer Category) and First Prize (Chamber Work for Both Chinese and Western Instrument/Composer Category) at the Beijing "Voice of China" Composition Competition.

May 18 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Stylistic Gesture as an Emotional Vehicle in My Work" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker: Kung Chi-shing
Moderator: Dr Lam Fung

     Kung Chi-shing is a Hong Kong composer, performer and music activist. Kung founded the music group the Box with Peter Suart in 1987. He has been active in organising "Open Music", a free outdoor concert series, since 2009. Over the past two decades, Kung's works have reflected his experiments with different music styles and modern theatrical art.

May 25 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Ng Cheuk-yin's Music World" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker: Ng Cheuk-yin
Moderator: Dr Mui Kwong-chiu

     Ng Cheuk-yin is a composer, sheng player and a cappella artist. Ng is also a graduate of the Department of Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2012, Ng received an Award for Best Artist from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. His work "Rock Hard" (a theatrical choral concert) and "Before the City Collapses" (a double sheng concerto) were recognised with Best Local Serious Composition and Most Performed Works Awards at the CASH Golden Sail Music Awards in 2009 and 2013 respectively.

June 1 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Innovation, Technology and Contemporary Music" (conducted in English)
Speaker: Professor Christopher Keyes
Moderator: Dr Lo Hau-man

     Professor Christopher Keyes has been described as "Truly masterful ... a modernised Rachmaninoff" by Fanfare magazine. He began his music career as a pianist, winning many competitions, and his works have been performed and broadcast in more than 30 countries. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University.

June 8 (Wednesday)
Topic: "In Quest of Diversity - The Legacy of Postmodernism" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker: Dr Tung Lai-shing
Moderator: Dr Chris Hung
Demonstrators: Kaisan (qin) and Chung Chi-woo (piano)

     Tung Lai-shing graduated from the Department of Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the 1970s. He later continued his studies at Pennsylvania State University in the United States, where he completed his doctorate of philosophy in composition. "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting" is one of his major compositions and was commissioned by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and written for an orchestra and Cantonese opera actors.
