Hong Kong Customs detected two suspected smuggling cases at Lok Ma Chau and Shenzhen Bay Control Point yesterday (March 8) and seized a total of 1 037 smartphones and 238 smartphone monitors, worth about $2.6 million in total, from an outgoing container truck and a coach.
Yesterday afternoon, Customs officers intercepted an outgoing container truck at Lok Ma Chau Control Point and seized 74 smartphones inside the driving compartment of the container truck. In the evening, Customs officers intercepted an outgoing coach at Shenzhen Bay Control Point and seized 963 smartphones and 238 smartphone monitors beside the driver seat. Two male drivers, aged 54 and 42, were arrested on suspicion of attempting to export unmanifested cargo.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
