The Government today (March 4) held a cocktail reception at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum in celebration of the Hong Kong Shipping Register (HKSR) crossing the 100 million gross tonnage mark. The Secretary for Transport and Housing, Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, says at the cocktail reception that since its establishment in 1990, the HKSR has grown from about 6 million gross tonnage to over 100 million gross tonnage in September 2015. Currently, the HKSR ranks first in Asia and fourth in the world. He also announces that a new high-level steering body, the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board, will be established in April this year to assist the Government in driving the growth of high value-added and professional maritime services in the city, fostering talent development, and promoting Hong Kong as an international maritime hub. Three functional committees, each chaired by an industry person, will be formed under the Board to strengthen the trade's participation.
