A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) said a Zlin Z242L fixed-wing, single-engined aircraft of the Hong Kong Aviation Club (registration number B-LUR) crashed into Tolo Harbour, near Lo Fu Wat, this afternoon (February 27).

"The CAD's Air Traffic Control Tower received a report from the Police at around 2.20pm, citing that a member of the public had witnessed a light aircraft crashed into the sea. The CAD has immediately initiated the emergency alerting procedure and notified relevant parties for the search and rescue. A man, who was subsequently certified dead, was found in the aircraft's wreckage under the water by the firemen," the spokesman said.

"According to information provided by the Hong Kong Aviation Club, the pilot was on a solo flight without any passenger when the accident occurred," he added.

The Chief Inspector of Accidents ordered an inspector's investigation in accordance with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation (Investigation of Accidents) Regulations (Chapter 448B). An investigation team has been set up for the follow-up work.
