To celebrate the Spring Lantern Festival, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present a wide range of activities including festive lantern carnivals and lantern displays in various locations from February 20 to 22. Admission to all activities is free. The event is also part of the "Appreciate Hong Kong" Campaign.
Featuring a variety of entertainment, three Lunar New Year Lantern Carnivals will be held at Tuen Mun Park, Po Tsui Park in Tseung Kwan O, and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC) Piazza. Details are as follows:
1. New Territories West Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival
Date and time: February 20 (Saturday),
7.30pm to 10pm
Venue : Tuen Mun Park
Programme : Spectacular ethnic songs and dances,
Chinese folk craft demonstrations,
a Chinese music ensemble,
a Cantonese puppet opera, diabolo
performances, martial arts, a lantern
quiz corner, fortune telling stalls
and lantern displays
2. New Territories East Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival
Date and time: February 21 (Sunday),
7.30pm to 10pm
Venue : Po Tsui Park, Tseung Kwan O
Programme : Spectacular ethnic songs and dances,
Chinese folk craft demonstrations,
choral performances, a unicorn dance parade,
hand and face painting and a DIY crafts stall,
wish-making and lantern quiz corners and lantern displays
3. Urban Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival
Date and time: February 22 (Monday),
7.30pm to 10pm
Venue : HKCC Piazza
Programme : Spectacular ethnic songs and dances,
Chinese folk craft demonstrations,
a Chinese music ensemble, a dragon
ˇ@ˇ@ˇ@ˇ@dance parade, puppet shows, an origami workshop,
a lantern quiz corner, lantern displays
and the Hong Kong Pulse 3D Light Show
The Tibet Arts Troupe, supported by the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of the Ministry of Culture, will perform the spectacular ethnic song and dance programme "China's TibetˇDTashi Delek" at the three lantern carnivals. In addition, arts and crafts masters from Guangdong and Hong Kong will demonstrate Chinese folk crafts including the making of Foshan Qiuse artefacts, Nanhai rattan weaving, wood carving and lion head crafting.
A traditional lantern display "The Golden Monkey Celebrating the Lantern Festival" made by local paper craft masters for the "Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage - Exhibition on Traditional Craftsmanship of Lantern Making" will run from February 19 to 24 at the HKCC Piazza. The display features the story of the "Journey to the West" in which Tang Sanzang, his three disciples and the White Dragon-horse travel west to acquire knowledge about Buddhism. The performance also wishes visitors good luck and great fortune in the Chinese New Year.
Another Lunar New Year lantern display, "Kingdom of Vigorous Monkeys", is running at the HKCC Piazza until February 28. The display features monkeys playing on the Flower and Fruit Mountain, symbolising energy and agility in the Year of Monkey.
In addition to the lantern carnivals, the programme "Youth Night" will be held at the above venues one night before each carnival from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, showcasing the energy and creativity of young people alongside a variety of programmes.
