Government statement on missing persons incident
************************************************

In response to media enquiries on the cases of the missing persons associated with a bookstore in Hong Kong, a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) spokesman said:

"As the HKSARG has publicly and repeatedly stated, only Hong Kong law enforcement agencies are empowered under the Basic Law to enforce laws in Hong Kong.

"The HKSARG attaches great importance to the cases. The Police have been conducting investigations even after the wife of Mr Lee Po cancelled her report to the Police. Under the established channel of communication, the Police have been seeking assistance from the Mainland authorities and have received replies which the Police have made public. Any suggestion that 'Mr Lee was involuntarily removed to the Mainland' remains speculative.

"The HKSARG will continue to follow through with the cases."
