Daily flight movements hit new record

A total of 1 227 flight movements were handled at the Hong Kong International Airport on February 6, setting a new single-day record, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) said today (February 8).

The number of flight movements surpassed the previous single-day record of 1 210 flight movements set on April 3, 2015, and exceeded the daily average of 1 117 movements recorded in 2015 by nearly 10 per cent. Moreover, 874 flight movements also operated through the Hong Kong Flight Information Region on February 6, making up a total of 2 101 flights handled by the CAD within the 24-hour period.

The increase in flight movements was attributed to the high demand during the Lunar New Year holidays. The extra flights were mostly operated to destinations in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia. Bali was the most popular destination followed by Taipei and Seoul.

In 2015, over 406 020 aircraft movements were handled at the Hong Kong International Airport and more than 252 000 aircraft movements operated through the Hong Kong Flight Information Region. They represented respective increases of about 3 per cent and 8 per cent compared with 2014.

"The CAD's Air Traffic Management Division has deployed additional staff to cater for the seasonal demand and is always committed to ensuring safe and efficient air traffic service to the travelling public," the spokesman said.
