Steering Group on the Modification of Recycling and Refuse Collection Facilities in Public Places set up

     To further enhance the Government's waste reduction and resource recovery efforts in support of the implementation of quantity-based municipal solid waste (MSW) charging, the Environment Bureau today (February 1) announced the establishment of the Steering Group on the Modification of Recycling and Refuse Collection Facilities in Public Places.

     The Government is committed to introducing MSW charging in Hong Kong as a means to drive behavioral changes in waste reduction, and has been undertaking preparatory work on various fronts. One important area of work is to review the design and distribution of recycling and refuse collection facilities in public places to facilitate waste reduction and resource recovery in the community.

     "Taking into account the objectives of facilitating waste reduction and resource recovery, effective implementation of quantity-based MSW charging, and balancing the need for upholding environmental hygiene and cost-effectiveness in the use of public resources, the Steering Group will review existing situation regarding the provision of recycling and refuse collection facilities and recommend necessary modifications", said the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing.

     Chaired by the Secretary for the Environment, the Steering Group comprises members drawn from the relevant sectors, including design and planning, academia, business, non-profit groups and district personalities, as well as relevant government departments. The appointments of the Steering Group are for a term of two years from February 1, 2016 to  January 31, 2018.
