The Government today (December 31) announced that the Chief Executive, in his capacity as the Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), had appointed Professor Arthur Li as Chairman of the HKU Council for a term of three years with effect from January 1, 2016. Professor Li is currently a member of the HKU Council.

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, welcomed Professor Li's appointment.

"Professor Li is a veteran academic with extensive experience in teaching as well as the management and development of the university education sector. He is the former Secretary for Education and Manpower and the former Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and is devoted to public service in various capacities. A committed leader in society, Professor Li seeks to maximise the welfare of the organisations he serves. I am sure HKU will go from strength to strength with Professor Li at its helm," Mr Ng said.

Mr Ng also paid tribute to the outgoing Chairman of the HKU Council, Dr Leong Che-hung.

"Under Dr Leong's sterling leadership, HKU continued to capitalise on its position as one of the world's top-tier universities. Among the remarkable achievements during his tenure were the successful implementation of the New Academic Structure and the completion of various large scale campus development projects such as the Centennial Campus, which enabled the university to provide a distinguished education for students in an all-encompassing environment and to deepen internationalisation. On behalf of the SAR Government, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr Leong for his relentless contributions," he said.
