Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble to open Lingnan Music Series (with photo)

     The Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble will stage "A Concert of Chaozhou Music" in January next year to open the Lingnan Music Series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

     The programme will include Chaozhou gongs and drums xiao luogu and wind ensemble music in "Butterflies among Flowers"; xianshi ensemble music in "Yearning for Spring"; bass instrument ensemble music in "The Lotus Rising from the Water"; Chaozhou gongs and drums da luogu music in "Flying Dragon, Leaping Tiger"; Chaozhou operatic song singing in "Reunion of a Married Couple", "Jinhua Bidding Her Love Farewell" and "Unresolved Fury"; and Chaozhou gongs and drums xiao luogu music in "Lions Playing with a Ball".

     Performers at the concert will include Lau Fok-kwong, Li Tung-yat, Wong Shek-yuk, Choi Fat-chin, Lo Shau-chun, Tang Siu-cheong, Chan Yim-pau and Hui Din-fong. Vocalists invited to perform include Fong Wah, Lau Sik-chun, Lee Ching-lan, Chan Man-heung, Cheung Siu-suet and Yeung Mei-wah.

     The Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble was formed in the 1970s and was a regular performing group for outdoor entertainment programmes of the former Hong Kong Urban Council. Its members are local enthusiasts in Chaozhou music, most of whom have 20 to 30 years of performing experience. These veterans are now serving as coaches or music teachers to help groom younger musicians. Apart from performing as an accompanying ensemble for Chaozhou opera troupes in Hong Kong, the ensemble has also toured Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

     "A Concert of Chaozhou Music" will be staged at 8pm on January 30 (Saturday) at the Theatre of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre.
