The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Co-ordination Centre jointly held a public seminar today (November 27) to inform the public about cyber security risks, good practices on information security and measures to safeguard personal devices and private information.

The seminar was part of the Build a Secure Cyberspace 2015 campaign under the theme "Cyber Security is Everywhere". The campaign this year aims to remind members of the community that they are surrounded by cyber security risks and urge them to stay vigilant in the face of security threats from technological devices around them as well as how to apply corresponding security measures to address these challenges.

Officiating at the seminar, the Deputy Government Chief Information Officer (Consulting and Operations), Mr Victor Lam, said, "With the widespread use of the Internet of Things, more and more devices around us such as television sets, cameras, watches and so on are going online for the enhancement of our daily lives. However, the more devices are connected to the Internet, the more channels hackers can have to launch cyber attacks.

"To defend against the cyber attacks around us, we should equip ourselves with skills and knowledge, and put suitable security measures in place. We should also pay the utmost attention to the security risks that a smart device might carry."

The one-day seminar included several sessions in which representatives from the Government, industry associations and experts shared details about a range of hot topics including the trends in cyber crimes and information security challenges, points to note on mobile banking, mobile and smart device security, cloud security and effective measures for organisations to combat cyber attacks.

An award ceremony for the "Cyber Security is Everywhere" Graphic Design Contest was also held at today's seminar. The contest was divided into three groups: open, secondary school and primary school. Contestants were required to create a graphic design to promote public awareness of information security and security best practices. Over 1,500 entries were received. Details about the contest and the winning entries are available at www.cybersecurity.hk/en/contest-2015.php .

An annual promotional event, the Build a Secure Cyberspace campaign also features other public engagement activities such as school visits and television and radio programmes. For details on the campaign and its related programmes, please visit www.cybersecurity.hk/en/events.php.
