Key statistics on operating characteristics of the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors in 2014

     According to the results of the 2014 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors released today (November 27) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors' total receipts (i.e. sales and other receipts) amounted to $5,215.2 billion in 2014, representing an increase of 2.1% over 2013; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 3.4% compared with 2013 to $32.3 million in 2014.

     Operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees of the above sectors altogether amounted to $4,811.7 billion in 2014, representing an increase of 2.3% over 2013; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 3.6% compared with 2013 to $29.8 million in 2014.

     Gross surplus of the sectors, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees, edged up by 0.1% over 2013 to $403.4 billion in 2014; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus was $2.5 million in 2014, which increased by 1.3% over 2013. For all these sectors taken together, gross surplus accounted for 7.7% of total receipts in 2014, which edged down by 0.2 percentage point compared with 2013.

     Value added of the sectors, which is a measure of their total contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 2.0% over 2013 to $635.2 billion in 2014; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $3.9 million in 2014, which increased by 3.2% over 2013.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the aforementioned sectors comprised some 161 300 establishments and engaged about 1 132 500 persons, or an average of 7.0 persons per establishment, in 2014.

     In the import/export trade, total receipts amounted to $4,136.5 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $3,821.8 billion in 2014. Gross surplus increased from $310.3 billion in 2013 to $314.6 billion in 2014, accounting for 7.6% of total receipts in 2014. Value added increased by 2.3% over 2013 to $440.8 billion.

     In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $326.4 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $317.4 billion in 2014. Gross surplus increased from $9.0 billion in 2013 to $9.1 billion in 2014, accounting for 2.8% of total receipts in 2014. Value added increased by 4.5% over 2013 to $22.3 billion.

     In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $577.8 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $525.2 billion in 2014. Gross surplus decreased from $56.7 billion in 2013 to $52.6 billion in 2014, accounting for 9.1% of total receipts in 2014. Value added decreased by 1.5% compared with 2013 to $95.8 billion.

     In the accommodation services sector which cover hotels, guesthouses, boarding houses and other establishments providing short term accommodation, total receipts amounted to $46.5 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $28.6 billion in 2014. Gross surplus increased from $17.6 billion in 2013 to $17.9 billion in 2014, accounting for 38.5% of total receipts in 2014. Value added increased by 3.1% over 2013 to $30.3 billion.

     In the food services sector which mainly cover restaurants, total receipts amounted to $128.1 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $118.8 billion in 2014. Gross surplus decreased from $9.5 billion in 2013 to $9.3 billion in 2014, accounting for 7.2% of total receipts in 2014. Value added increased by 4.7% over 2013 to $46.0 billion.
