Appointments to Committee and Review Committee on Trust Fund for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

     The Government announced today (November 6) the appointment of the Chairman and three new members, as well as the re-appointment of one incumbent member, to the Committee on Trust Fund for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) for a term of two years with effect from November 8.

     Mr Fong Cheung-fat is appointed as the new Chairman of the Committee. He is the Chief Executive Officer of SAHK and was a member of the Committee from 2009 to 2015. He is currently a member of the Council of the Queen Elizabeth Foundation for the Mentally Handicapped, the Guardianship Board and the Hong Kong Paralympians Fund Management Committee.

     The new members are Ms Clara Chan Yuen-shan, Ms Kitty Chau Shuk-king and Dr David Lam Tat-yin. The incumbent member, Professor Mary Ip Sau-man, is re-appointed.

     Ms Chan is the Vice-Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of Lee Kee Holdings Limited. She is a member of the Energy Advisory Committee, the Trade and Industry Advisory Board and District Fight Crime Committee (Kowloon City District).

     Ms Chau is the Senior Programme Director (Strategic Partnership) of Christian Family Service Centre, and a former member of the Guardianship Board.

     Dr Lam is the Hospital Chief Executive of Ruttonjee and Tang Shiu Kin Hospitals and Tung Wah Eastern Hospital. He is a member of the Supplementary Medical Professions Council.

     The Government also appointed Dr John Leung Lai-yin as a member of the Review Committee on Trust Fund for SARS for a term of two years with effect from November 8. Dr Leung is a medical doctor specialising in radiology.

     The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, welcomed the appointments and said he looked forward to the members' contributions to the work of the two committees. Mr Cheung also thanked the outgoing Chairperson of the Committee on Trust Fund for SARS, Ms Deborah Wan Lai-yau, and outgoing members of the two committees, Dr James Joseph Lam, Mr Wong King-lun and Dr Jane Chan Chun-kwong, for their sterling contribution to the Committee and the Review Committee.

     The Committee on Trust Fund for SARS was set up in 2003 to advise the Government on the operation of and applications for assistance under the Trust Fund. The Review Committee was set up at the same time to consider applications for review of the decisions made by the Committee on Trust Fund for SARS. Ex-gratia financial assistance to recovered and suspected SARS patients is subject to medical proof and financial need assessment.
