Following is the speech by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, at the prize presentation ceremony of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open 2015 today (October 18):

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good evening. What an exciting game. It gives me great pleasure to join you all today in watching the Singles Final and to be present at this prize presentation ceremony of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open 2015. On behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, I would like to thank all the players for coming to Hong Kong to participate in this tournament.

This is a WTA sanctioned international series event. Locally, it has been awarded the "M" Mark status for a second time by the Major Sports Events Committee in recognition of its contribution to promoting tennis in Hong Kong and reinforcing our position as an Asian hub for major sports events. The Mega Events Fund also sponsors this tournament, making it possible to bring in renowned professional female tennis players. As tennis is a popular sport in Hong Kong, these star players have no doubt attracted many local and overseas spectators. I am sure that our spectators have had a wonderful time watching some exciting matches this past week, and are highly impressed by the excellent skills of these favourite players.

To promote Hong Kong as a tourist destination, the Government has spared no effort in filling Hong Kong's calendar with spectacular events throughout the year. I imagine that sports lovers visiting Hong Kong recently will have been extremely busy, with various exciting sports events being held one after another. This event has followed on from the inaugural Hong Kong Cyclothon last weekend and the annual Harbour Race Swim this morning, and the Hong Kong Open, one of the oldest golf tournaments in the world, is just around the corner.

The Government is committed to fostering a sustainable sporting culture in our city, and we are always prepared to render support to sports associations, such as the Hong Kong Tennis Association, in organising major international sports events. It is also our hope that such events will attract tourists from overseas and sponsors from the business sector. With financial support from both the public and private sectors, the success of such major sports events is assured.

Speaking of the support from the business sector, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all the sponsors, especially the Prudential Hong Kong Limited, the title sponsor, for their generous support in making this event happen. I look forward to more opportunities for similar collaboration with the business sector in the years to come.

Last but not least, my gratitude goes to the Hong Kong Tennis Association for once again bringing us this fascinating event.

May I wish all overseas players, officials and visitors a most enjoyable and wonderful stay in our vibrant and charming city.

     Thank you very much.
