Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre and Public Library was officially opened today (September 7) to provide district residents with various quality facilities for sports, leisure and reading.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, said Tseung Kwan O has become an energetic new town with a population of more than 400,000, and many young people now call it home. To complement the development of Tseung Kwan O, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has planned a variety of leisure and cultural facilities for the region and the establishment of Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre and Public Library meets local demand for community facilities.
Mr Lau attributed the successful completion of Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre and Public Library to the concerted efforts of the Government and local organisations. He expressed gratitude to the Sai Kung District Council for its valuable advice, as well as the dedicated efforts of the Architectural Services Department in designing and planning the project.
Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony included the Chairman of the Sai Kung District Council, Mr George Ng; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; the Project Director of the Architectural Services Department, Mrs Alice Yu; and the Acting District Officer (Sai Kung), Mr Peter Kwok.
Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre has a wide variety of leisure facilities, including the first outdoor climbing wall meeting the international sports climbing competition standard in Sai Kung District. This allows members of the public who are interested in sports climbing to polish their skills. The multi-purpose arena in the sports centre can be used as basketball courts, volleyball courts or badminton courts. Other facilities include an indoor jogging track, a fitness room, a children's playroom and multi-purpose rooms. There is also a unique two-storey open space covering one hectare outside the sports centre. An array of facilities in the open space, including a landscaped sitting-out area, a lawn, a fitness corner for the elderly and a children's playground, are open for public use round the clock.
Adjacent to the sports centre, the three-storey Tiu Keng Leng Public Library occupies more than 2,900 square metres. It provides diverse services and facilities, including a Students' Study Room, a Newspapers and Periodicals Section, an Adult Library, a Children's Library, an Extension Activities Room, express check-in service, self-service book borrowing and renewal service, a Multimedia Information System, a Computer and Information Centre, a coffee corner and Internet and digital service workstations.
The library has a collection of about 170,000 items and provides more than 140 local and overseas newspapers and periodical titles for readers with different types of interests. Various extension activities are organised on a regular basis to promote reading among the public, such as storytelling for children, book displays and subject talks. Schools and members of cultural and educational organisations are welcome to contact the library for group visits to learn more about its facilities and services.
Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre opens from 7am to 11pm daily, except for every second and fourth Monday of each month from 7am to 1pm when it is closed for regular maintenance. Tiu Keng Leng Public Library opens from 9am to 8pm from Mondays to Wednesdays and on Fridays and Saturdays, from noon to 8pm on Thursdays, and from 9am to 5pm on Sundays and public holidays.
