Transcript of remarks by SLW on wage claims by DSC employees
************************************************************

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, on the wage claims by employees of DSC, after attending a function organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Handicapped Youth today (August 20):

Reporter: Is there any new development regarding DSC's wages?

Secretary for Labour and Welfare: The Labour Department is making its best endeavour to help close to 400 ex-employees to seek ex-gratia payment under the Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund. In fact, the Department has triggered the process and is helping them. We will expedite the process to ensure they can get the payment as quickly as possible.

Reporter: Will there be a Labour Tribunal hearing?

Secretary for Labour and Welfare: At the Labour Tribunal, we are talking about 16 other employees not covered in the compulsory winding-up petition. In fact, they worked for another company, not under the same owner. But we are also helping them and will refer them to the Labour Tribunal tomorrow to put in their claims, so that the hearing can be conducted as quickly as possible. We will also help them to seek legal aid to petition for a compulsory winding-up order so that they can also apply for ex-gratia payment under the Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund.
