August 2015 issue of Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics now available
************************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (August 17) the August 2015 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "Consumer Price Index analysed by Classification of Individual Consumption According to Purpose" and "Container Statistics, 2009 to 2014".

"Consumer Price Index analysed by Classification of Individual Consumption According to Purpose"

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the changes over time in the price level of consumer commodities and services generally purchased by households.

Apart from the overall index, further breakdowns of the CPI by commodity/service group are also released to facilitate more in-depth analyses on consumer inflation. When analysing the CPIs, Hong Kong has all along adopted a classification system which has evolved over time to meet user needs and local situation.

In recent years, some economies started to adopt the Classification of Individual Consumption According to Purpose (COICOP) developed by the United Nations in analysing the CPI. In view of this, C&SD compiles the 2009/10-based CPI based on the COICOP to facilitate international comparison.

This feature article gives a brief introduction of the COICOP and analyses the 2009/10-based CPIs by COICOP.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Consumer Price Index Section, C&SD (Tel: 3903 7370).

"Container Statistics, 2009 to 2014"

Although the container throughput decreased slightly from 22.4 million TEUs in 2013 to 22.2 million TEUs in 2014, the port of Hong Kong was still one of the busiest ports in the world. Laden container movements between Hong Kong and the mainland of China (the Mainland) accounted for 37.3% of the laden container throughput of the port of Hong Kong in 2014. About 72.4% of the laden container movements between Hong Kong and the Mainland were in the Pearl River Delta region.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Shipping and Cargo Statistics Section, C&SD (Tel: 2582 4889).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population; labour; external trade; National Income and Balance of Payments; prices; business performance; energy; housing and property; Government accounts, finance and insurance; and transport, communications and tourism. For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
