The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, today (August 13) visited the Society for Community Organization (SoCO) New World Community Centre in Sham Shui Po to see the various support services provided by the Centre for grass-roots families in West Kowloon.

Accompanied by the Director of SoCO, Mr Ho Hei-wah, Mr Cheung was briefed by the Organization's front-line staff on the Centre's target clients and services.

The SoCO New World Community Centre commenced operation in October 2012 to provide support services for grass-roots families in West Kowloon. Mr Cheung noted that the Centre's services include child care and homework counselling, employment training and consultation, community mutual aid services and assisting women to seek employment.

When touring the facilities at the Centre, Mr Cheung chatted with the service users to learn about their needs and how the Centre's services helped improve their livelihood. He also talked to the tutors and students while observing the child care and homework classes. Mr Cheung commended the Centre's support services for effectively helping the grass-roots people in the district to raise their ability to move upwards. This, in turn, helps create a positive impact on poverty alleviation.
