The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, started his visit programme in Melbourne, Australia, today (August 10, Melbourne time) to foster bilateral relations between Hong Kong and Australia.
Addressing a boardroom lunch organised by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia, Mr So said Australia and Hong Kong have long enjoyed strong economic, trade and people-to-people links.
In particular, Mr So pointed out that Hong Kong has the experience, expertise and connections to serve as the fund-raising and financial management hub for the "One Belt, One Road" initiatives announced by the Central Government. Foreign investors will definitely benefit from the initiatives by establishing a foothold in Hong Kong to seize the business opportunities.
Mr So then visited a co-working space and a non-profit organisation dedicated to building and supporting the start-up ecosystem in Victoria to learn about the start-up scene there. He also attended a discussion with the local start-up community residing in the co-working space, during which he introduced Hong Kong's start-up landscape as well as opportunities and support provided for start-ups in Hong Kong.
After the visit, he met with the Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade of Victoria, Mr Philip Dalidakis, to exchange views on issues of mutual concern.
He will attend a dinner gathering with Hong Kong people living and working in Melbourne in the evening.
Mr So will continue his visit tomorrow, visiting the Kangan Institute, a technical and further education provider, and meeting with delegates from the Council of Textile and Fashion Industries of Australia. He will also attend a boardroom lunch organised by the Business Council of Australia, and call on the Chinese Consul-General in Melbourne, Mr Song Yumin, and government officials of Victoria.
