Following is the statement made by the Acting Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today (July 31) on Beijing's successful bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games:
On behalf of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, I would like to convey my heartiest congratulations to Beijing on its successful bid for the Winter Olympics.
This is the second time that our country has won the bid for an Olympic event, following the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
In 2008, Beijing made the Summer Olympics the focus of the world and demonstrated that our nation has the ability to successfully host a world-class mega sports event. Hong Kong also had the honour and privilege to co-host the Beijing Olympic Equestrian Events and made concerted efforts to bring the impressive and entertaining equestrian events to the city, receiving high praise from the participating teams.
We have seen robust development of our country since the conclusion of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. City infrastructure as well as the living standards of the people have been enhanced. The increase in the overall strength of the country will enable further success in holding international sports games.
We hope that the 2022 Beijing Olympics can be the best ever Winter Olympics in history.
