The Hong Kong Police Force organised the Police Recruitment Seminar at the Hong Kong Police College today (May 30). More than 600 participants from the Junior Police Call and other youth uniformed groups attended the seminar to learn more about the revised Physical Fitness Test.
The revised Physical Fitness Test comprises 800-metre run, 4 x 10 metres shuttle-run (during which candidates need to pick up bean-bags on the ground), vertical jump and handgrip tests. Starting from October 2015, the revised test will be launched on a pilot basis for 12 months.
A spokesman for the Police Recruitment Division said that the new physical fitness requirements were commensurate with the Force's daily duty needs.
The Force invited Professor Hui Sai-chuen of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to review the present physical fitness test, which has been in use for nearly 30 years. The research started in 2009, focus group interviews and meetings were conducted with different frontline Police officers to identify the job requirements of Police work. Job simulation tests and job-related physical tests were then conducted to determine the test items, scoring systems and the passing standards.
After a series of scientific researches, the above mentioned four test items were identified as the most relevant to the physical requirements of daily Police work. In late 2014, the Force endorsed the research result for adoption as pre-employment physical fitness test of new recruits. Details of the revised Physical Fitness Test will be uploaded to the Police website in June, to allow sufficient preparation time for applicants.
During the seminar today, participants could learn more about Police training facilities and experience the life of Recruit Police Constables (RPC). Touring of fitness training area, tactical training complex, RPC barrack and having lunch at RPC canteen were arranged. Initial screening, which included height and weight measurement as well as eyesight test, was also conducted on-site by the Recruitment Division.
The Force aims to recruit 1,510 Police officers in 2015, including 190 Probationary Inspectors and 1,320 RPCs. The Force welcomes all people who possess the competence, share the same values of the Force and endeavour to become professional Police officers to serve the community. The next major recruitment event of the Force is the Summer Recruitment Day to be held on July 25.
