The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited the Transport Department (TD) this afternoon (May 21) to better understand the department's work and meet its staff.

Accompanied by the Commissioner for Transport, Mrs Ingrid Yeung, Mrs Lam first toured the Hong Kong Licensing Office at United Centre in Admiralty, where she was introduced to the provision of various vehicle and driver licensing services by the Office, including registering and licensing motor vehicles and issuing, renewing or cancelling vehicle or driver permits and licences. While meeting with front-line staff to learn more about their daily work, Mrs Lam commended them for serving the public with dedication and professionalism.

Mrs Lam then met with the directorate officers of the department at the headquarters of the TD at Immigration Tower in Wan Chai and received a briefing on the work and daily operation of different branches of the TD. She then proceeded to the Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre (ETCC), where she was briefed on the work of the Traffic Control Centre and control and surveillance of traffic, as well as the operation of the ETCC. She learned that the ETCC co-ordinates public transport measures during serious traffic or transport disruptions. It also works closely with other government departments and public transport operators in collecting the latest traffic and road situation information and carries out appropriate co-ordination action and responses, as well as develops traffic and transport contingency plans.

Chatting with front-line staff of the TD during the visit, Mrs Lam commended them for meeting their work challenges in a professional manner. She said they play an important role in traffic control and surveillance as well as the timely provision of traffic information to the public, and expressed gratitude for their efforts in keeping Hong Kong moving.
