Multi-media exhibition invites public to "Discover the Basic Law" (with photos/video)
************************************************************

With an innovative and artistic approach, students from the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) have created 25 pieces of artwork inspired by the Basic Law.

The artwork pieces are on display at the "Discover the Basic Law" exhibition and include illustrations, installations, typographic design, sculptures and motion graphics. The exhibition commemorates the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law and has been organised by the Information Services Department in partnership with the HKDI.

Officiating at the opening ceremony today (May 16), the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, said, "To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law, the HKSAR Government has organised an array of activities with the aim of promoting in the community a comprehensive and correct understanding of the Basic Law. Such an understanding is crucial to giving the Basic Law its full play to maintain Hong Kong's unique strengths.

"I am pleased to see the collaboration between the Information Services Department and the HKDI in presenting the 'Discover the Basic Law' multi-media interactive art exhibition. Visitors to the exhibition will be offered a fresh perspective to get to know the Basic Law, an important document that concerns the daily lives of us all."

Other officiating guests at the ceremony were the Director of Information Services, Mr Patrick Nip; the Chairman of the Vocational Training Council, Dr Clement Chen; and the Principal of the HKDI, Mr Leslie Lu.

Dr Chen said, "The HKSAR Government has been promoting the Basic Law through many different channels, and I am grateful that the Government has given our students this opportunity to show their strength and creativity."

One of the larger exhibits is a sculpture entitled "Book of Life". With Basic Law inscriptions on two open pages, the book forms the foundation of two trees with branches showing the words "Rights" and "Freedoms". This shows that under the Basic Law, Hong Kong's rights and freedoms are protected and can be further developed.

The creative ideas for the artwork are based on the Basic Law's Preamble, Chapter I (General Principles), Chapter II (Relationship between the Central Authorities and the HKSAR) and Chapter IV (Political Structure).

Another exhibit allows visitors to "Discover the Basic Law" by using a special viewing glass to reveal hidden content on "blank" video screens.

Details of all artwork can be found on the "Discover the Basic Law" website: www.discoverthebasiclaw.gov.hk.

The "Discover the Basic Law" exhibition is being held at The Westwood, Upper Ground Atrium, 8 Belcher's Street, Western District, Hong Kong until May 25. The opening hours are from 10am to 10pm. Admission is free. Souvenirs will be distributed at the venue on a first-come, first-served basis.

The exhibition will move to the Domain in Yau Tong, Kowloon, from May 30 to June 5. Dates and venues for other exhibitions are being finalised and will be available from the website.
