Exhibition of 25th Anniversary of Basic Law Promulgation opens today (with photos)

     The "Exhibition of the 25th Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People's Republic of China" (the Exhibition) is opened today (April 4) and runs until May 25 at the Hong Kong Museum of History.  Featuring valuable exhibits and photographs, the Exhibition introduces the historical background of the Basic Law and charts the path of its drafting, promulgation and successful implementation.

     Highlight exhibits include the wax figures of Mr Deng Xiaoping and Mrs Margaret Thatcher meeting for the negotiation of Hong Kong's future in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in 1982 and "The Draft Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (for Solicitation of Opinions)" issued in 1988 by the Drafting Committee for the Basic Law, etc. The Exhibition suits visitors of all ages, with interactive games and photo-taking area available.

     The Basic Law was adopted and promulgated by the National People's Congress on April 4, 1990. It came into effect on July 1, 1997 when the HKSAR Government was established. This Exhibition is one of the highlights to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law with a view to enhancing the public's understanding of the contents and provisions of the Basic Law.

     The Basic Law prescribes the systems practised in the HKSAR in order to ensure the implementation of the basic policies of the People's Republic of China (PRC) regarding Hong Kong. Adopted in accordance with the Constitution of the PRC, the Basic Law enshrines in the form of law, the important concepts of "One country, Two systems", "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy.

     The opening ceremony of the Exhibition was held today. Guests attending the ceremony included the Chief Secretary for Administration and Chairperson of the Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee (BLPSC), Mrs Carrie Lam; the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Raymond Tam; the Deputy Director of the HKSAR Basic Law Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Ms Elsie Leung; the Permanent Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Ms Chang King-yiu; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; and convenors of the five Working Groups under the BLPSC. They are: convenor of the Working Group on Local Community, Mr Wong Kwan-yu; convenor of the Working Group on Industrial, Commercial and Professional Sectors, Ms Alexandra Lo; convenor of the Working Group on Overseas Community, Dr Eugene Chan; convenor of the Working Group on Civil Servants, Mr Rock Chen; and convenor of the Working Group on Teachers and Students, Mr Tai Hay-lap.

     The "Exhibition of the 25th Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China" is jointly presented by the BLPSC, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Held at the 1/F Lobby, the Hong Kong Museum of History, the Exhibition is open for free admission for all members of the public.

     The Hong Kong Museum of History is located at 100 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. It is open from 10am to 6pm on weekdays, and from 10am to 7pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. It is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays).
